It’s been a really great experience hosting the Klaus Moje Glass Award here as the first exhibition in the gallery. Canberra Glassworks have done a wonderful job setting up the space and it is quite remarkable to see it now from where it began.

The Klaus Moje Glass Award honours one of the most significant contemporary artists working in glass, and coincidently - his son Danilo is now the joinery manager at Thor’s Hammer! The Award recognises outstanding achievement in contemporary glass art and celebrates the work of artists whose practices are among the most innovative and influential in this medium.

Moje is recognised not only for the outstanding contribution he made through his work and research, but also for his consistent support for colleagues and artists both in the Canberra community and worldwide. He established the Glass Workshop at the ANU School of Art and Design in 1982 and was instrumental in establishing Canberra Glassworks. Both are now recognised as world class for their innovation, impact and the calibre of their facilities that allow existing and new generations of artists working with glass to grow and flourish.

The opening night was great fun, with the artists, friends and industry members joining to congratulate the finalists and eventual winner - Kirstie Rea - who received $10,000 in prize money and a four-week residency at the Canberra Glassworks.

We want to thank all the artists for their amazing works, and Canberra Glassworks for running the set up and event so efficiently and making the first exhibition such a success.
