Thor’s Hammer Welcomes a New 5-Axis CNC to the Family

August 2022

Big news coming out of Hammer HQ. We've just become the proud owners of a new 5-axis CNC machine from Biesse. We pride ourselves on our ability to combine modern machinery and traditional hand tool skills to make our products, so this investment is yet another way for us to continue to streamline our production while maintaining the skilled craftsmanship that we’re known for.

Learn a little more about the 5-axis CNC machine in this short blog post, and stay tuned for news about planned innovations made possible by this new piece.

What’s a 5-Axis CNC?

CNC stands for ‘Computer Numerical Control’ and refers to a type of machinery that uses a subtractive manufacturing process (as opposed to the additive process used with the more commonly-known 3D printers). The 5-axis CNC has a multidirectional approach by allowing a combination of parts or tools to simultaneously move on five different axes, enabling the machining of complex parts.

A range of industries use a 5-axis CNC, from aerospace engineering to the manufacturing of medical parts to woodwork and joinery—our expertise! Our cabinetmakers are keen to use the CNC to automate some of our routine and repetitive processes, and then see what else they can do with it as they test the possibilities of the new machine.

Thor’s Hammer’s New 5-axis CNC from Italy

Our particular 5-axis CNC is a high quality piece of machinery that has been made in Italy by Biesse, and shipped over to our workshop in Canberra. It was a significant investment for us, but we’re excited to see the new and exciting design opportunities that open up with this beast on board.

How Will the 5-Axis CNC Change What We Do Here at Thor’s Hammer?

To be quite honest, we’re still getting our heads around what this will mean for the business in the long term. Our design and joinery teams are excited to get creative in their designs and also to maximise efficiency across the board, especially within our furniture and benchtop product lines.

By setting up variables within the programming, we will be able to customise our furniture for our customers much more easily and at less cost. Plus, having the 5-axis CNC on board is going to keep our prototyping and development costs down, which will expand the creative possibilities for us, and be great for our customers - we will be able to respond heaps quicker to your ideas and briefs with new solutions and new products.

Got a Project in Mind?

We’ve been recycling timber and designing furniture and architectural products for 28 years. We have a highly skilled team of designers, timber recyclers, joiners and furniture makers, handpicked from Canberra and its surrounding regions.

If you have a project in mind that requires customisation, get in touch. We love to see your inspirations and the plans and photos of your space, and then work together to create a design which will complement all the details of your project and is the best fit for your design needs.

Throughout every step of the process, we design and build with care and consideration, producing pieces that will last a lifetime—or most likely several lifetimes!
