Custom-Made Cocktail Cabinet With Sliding Tambour Doors // From the Workshop

What do you do when you're a cocktail enthusiast who wants to keep your impressive alcohol collection safely tucked away? You get Thor's Hammer to custom-design and build a cocktail cabinet for you!
One of the best things about what we do here at Thor’s (and we do a lot!) is working with customers to custom-design interesting pieces or projects that need a little extra thought and functionality. We designed and built this cocktail cabinet for a Canberra couple with a passion for entertaining, and for cocktails. But with curious teenage sons, it was important to them that it could be easily locked, and that the lockability didn’t have an effect on the aesthetics of the piece. Designed by Chris Dalzell and built by Evan Humphreys, the customers were thrilled with the end product. Read on to find out some of the unique and interesting features of the cabinet.
Interesting feature #1—Sliding tambour doors
The sliding tambour doors on this beautiful piece worked really well. Tambour doors were a key option here for a few reasons. Firstly, they provide a stunning mid-century look that has a timeless sophistication. Secondly, tambour doors provide versatility, looking great open or closed. And finally, they’re very space-efficient, an important requirement for our customer. Plus, we made these doors lockable, to restrict access to the kids and teenagers in the house.
Interesting feature #2—Finely checked slats
We decided to build the sliding tambour doors from recycled Grey Ironbark, which resulted in some fine rustic checking in the slats.
This gave the whole piece a really unique—perhaps even unusual—look which the customers can now be proud to have in their home for years to come.
Interesting feature #3—Pull-out shelves
To make cocktail prep as easy and enjoyable as possible, we added some pull-out shelves in the lower section for smoother access to the bottles at the back of the shelves. We also added super handy pull out shelf at waist height for mixing drinks. Martini anyone?
Interesting feature #4—Can be disassembled for transportation & installation
With difficult access into our customers' house, we designed the cabinet to be partially assembled on-site.
