MATCHING & PATCHING EXISTING FLOORBOARDS
December 2021
You may have decided to extend your house and match existing floor boards to the extension, or you may have moved a wall or a kitchen cabinet, leaving a gap in your flooring that you need to fill. One thing is for sure, identifying and sourcing floorboards to match your existing floor can be tricky, so we’ve put together a few pointers to make it as simple as possible!
If possible, remove a sample of your flooring. If you can't spare a piece from your existing floor, it is worth checking for leftover pieces from the original installation under the house or in the garage. you never know what you may find! Bring in your sample for us to look at and we will identify the species and size for you.
If you’re unable to source a sample;
1. Take some clear, close-up photos - try and capture the colours in the photos to match the actual colour of the timber. If you can, take photos of finished and unfinished sections of your floorboards. If your whole floor is coated and you have access to under the house, then take some photos of the unfinished underside of the flooring, that is also really useful! Check for a species or brand name printed on the underside too. (Although these can sometimes be misleading - we have seen flooring printed Tas Oak which was actually Tasmanian Myrtle - a totally different colour timber!)
2. Measure the width of your floor boards (just the visible width - do not include the tongue). Measure a few boards and record the narrowest, the widest and the average, as old floor boards can vary a few millimetres.
3. Check when your house was built or when the floor was laid (if it was a renovation) as different species were commonly used in each decade and this can give us some good clues.
4. Email this information across to us and we'll see if we can identify the specific species.
Once we identify your timber, we can then check our stocks to find the matching species. If we don’t have something on hand, we will do our best to source the right timber from our demolition contacts.
