Reviving Classic Mountain Ash Parquetry: Salvaged from Tuggeranong Arts Centre

February 2025

When a dance studio floor reaches the end of its life, most of it usually ends up in landfill. In the case of Tuggeranong Arts Centre Dance Studio, however, we’ve salvaged a large batch of its mountain ash parquetry flooring for something a little different from our usual salvaged flooring options—and it’s now ready for a second life, perhaps as a feature floor in a backyard studio, granny flat, or living room.

A Unique Take on Parquetry

Parquetry is a type of timber flooring made from small, individually arranged blocks, creating geometric patterns. Traditionally, each piece is glued down one by one, making installation a time-intensive process. This batch offers a different approach—it’s already attached to a plywood backing, making it far easier to lay.

We removed the parquetry with the plywood base still attached, making each panel a sturdy 32mm thick. Instead of installing individual parquetry blocks, these panels have been docked to a manageable 935mm by 935mm, meaning each one covers almost a full square metre. This format makes installation far easier than traditional parquetry—you get the intricate look of a parquetry floor without the painstaking process of laying each piece by hand.

The brick pattern gives the flooring a structured, geometric appeal, while the light tones of the ash add warmth with a distinct mid-century feel. It’s a great fit for 1960s and 70s-inspired interiors, but equally at home in modern spaces that celebrate natural materials and history.

Ash Parquetry Panels With a History

Timber that’s already served a purpose carries a certain appeal. This batch of mountain ash parquetry has absorbed years of movement, music, and creativity, turning it into something far richer than a standard flooring option. The subtle variations in tone, small marks of history, and the durability of the material all contribute to its character.

For anyone after a distinctive timber floor with a Canberra connection, these panels carry a rich history while being practical, easy to install, and built to last—whether in a home, office, or studio.
