Narrow Tallowwood Salvaged Flooring
July 2024
We have new salvaged flooring arriving in our yard every few weeks, but it isn’t so often we get larger quantities from bigger buildings with as nice a patina as these boards. These tallowwood boards were salvaged from a school in Lakemba and has just been docked and cleaned and is in stock now.
NARROW 60 x 19mm TALLOWWOOD FROM THE HOLY SPIRIT CATHOLIC College IN LAKEMBA, NSW
Salvaged from a classic 1950s school building this high quality tallowwood comes with rich character and history.
These boards are special because:
Narrow boards are extra stable, and create a tight floor with minimal movement.
The floor has seen the tread of countless feet and has a great patina.
Tallowwood is a very hard and durable timber (class 1 durability - it was also used for bridge decks and cross arms on telegraph poles).
Fly Ash
You might notice the fly ash used under the floor between the battens (you can also see the floor lever used to pull up the boards). Fly ash was used as a fire retardant and sound deadener under the floors from 1900 to around 1970 in higher quality jobs, especially public works jobs like schools. You will also sometimes see dried seaweed or wheat straw used as a sound insulator between floors in old multi level apartments. Fly ash is what remains of the burnt coal from power stations and is inert. It is now used in the soil mix for green roofs because it is a great growing medium with good drainage properties.
In this job they filled the fly ash right to the top of the battens which made it really hard to get the levers in and pull the floor up.
