Twin Wine Cabinets in Sydney Mixed Reds // From the Workshop

May 2023

Wine lovers will attest to the importance of functional storage for their wine collection, where temperature, humidity and ventilation are carefully considered.

But our customer Daryl wanted more than functional storage. With a keen eye for design, he needed cellar storage that would fit the aesthetic of his recent house renovations.

So, we designed and made him a set of wine cabinets in our recycled Sydney Mixed Reds, blending in beautifully with the cellar’s striking red brick archway wall and textured remilled sawtooth flooring (also in our Sydney Mixed Reds).

Read on to learn more about the design and build of these built-in twin wine cabinets.

Design Brief

In the initial stages of design, Daryl provided David (the lead designer on this project) with some really good hand sketches, making his job a lot easier! While we never expect this from customers, it’s always welcome, and helps us to get inside the mind of our customers in order to understand their vision.

With Daryl’s vision clearly understood, David was then able to iron out the finer details; the size of the wine bottles that would be stored, the thickness of the individual timber components, amongst other things.

We designed the cabinets to be a mirror image of each other, to frame and balance the space. The middle cavity of each cabinet allows for the display of more special bottles in an upright position (or for pouring drinks), while the bottom section has adjustable shelves and X-shaped partitions for more storage space.

We used black powder-coated steel mesh for the racks, which influenced the design of the units, requiring careful attention to the dimensions. The powder-coating is an aesthetic consideration, but adds durability to the steel; very important given the glass bottles they will be storing.

And, it’s probably safe to assume that the Sydney Mixed Reds will blend in perfectly with Daryl’s favourite drop; Shiraz.

Making & Installation

This design and the joinery it required was complex and relied on skilled craftsmanship of joinery team member Evan, who made this impressive piece. We finished the timber component with Osmo Matt, a natural oil finish that brings out the beautiful red tones of the timber and compliments the raw red bricks on the back wall of the cellar.

Installation was carefully considered in the design as the pieces needed to fit through a standard sized door. To allow for an easy installation, we built each of the units in two sections, and our team reassembled them in the space.
