RED GUM SLABS

The natural bark edge of these slabs makes a beautiful feature in bench tops, tables and furniture. River Red Gum often also features unusual grain pattern like fiddleback, as well as interesting sap veins and gum pockets which we fill with a clear resin when making a finished product.

In the photos below we have a newly arrived stack of Red Gum timber slabs racked ready for final drying. A freshly felled tree can be up to 60% moisture content, but for the timber to be stable and usable we have to get that number down to around 10 - 14% depending on the application - and without the timber cupping and cracking. That’s where the science comes in! Our Red Gum slabs are dried slowly and carefully in a kiln to bring them down to the correct moisture content.

You can also see below our Dressing Manager using a moisture meter driven into the wood to determine the internal moisture content of each slab.

The other issue with slabs is making sure that trees aren't being illegally felled and that we aren't losing habitat trees. We source our slabs from salvaged street trees, road work clearing and other farm or backyard trees that have been properly authorised to be removed.

We typically always have a range of slabs available at the showroom, 10 Mildura Street, Griffith ACT.
