Eye-catching Spotted Gum Furniture & Joinery in Canberra New Build

When customer Gurjant Singh came to us with a plan to add timber features during the construction of his family’s new home in Denman Prospect, we were excited because designing and planning timber joinery from the outset provides us with much more flexibility.
For this project, we worked with Gurjant to design, build and install a unique floating mirror unit, and a huge custom room divider and shelving unit, as well as two sets of sleek and stunning floating shelves. All of the pieces are made in the much-coveted recycled spotted gum, adding warmth and character to their new home.

FLOATING MIRROR & DRAWER UNIT
Wall mounting a mirror and bench this large is a challenge, but one that we were equipped to tackle.
We custom designed a steel bracket and then engineered it in our steel workshop, before installing it inside the entrance foyer wall of the Singh’s house, while the house was still being built (before any plaster went on).
The bracket was a key part of the design, required to carry the weight of the heavy hardwood timber unit, while positioning each component perfectly so as not to interfere with the functionality of the drawers.
We designed and made the mirror component of this unit in two parts, rather than one large mirror which wouldn’t have been possible with a cabinet like this.
So, when installing we also had to ensure that the mirror appeared as though it was passing through the cabinet, or the continuity of the design would have been jeopardised.

ROOM DIVIDER / SHELVING UNIT
Combining the need for a room divider and somewhere to showcase artworks, we built this huge unit as a centrepiece for the open plan living area.
Separating the dining room and kitchen from the living room, the piece fits the brief and always catches the attention of the Singh’s guests.
Its cantilever open shelves add a unique touch, extending horizontally into the air while adding an open and spacious feel to the unit.
Measuring 2100 x 1800 x 400 mm, this unit required four Thor’s Hammer team members to deliver and install.

FLOATING SHELVES
Floating shelving was incorporated into both the family living and dining room area downstairs, as well as upstairs in the loft area, purpose built as a teenager’s ‘hangout’ zone.
These were also wall-mounted using our Thor’s Hammer heavy duty concealed brackets, custom designed and made here in our workshop.
