CURTIN REINCARNATION
May 2021
This house was reincarnated from a tired, leaky, dysfunctional house into a super-functional and comfortable modern family home. Originally 2 stars, their home is now 7.6 stars which is predicted to use 41% less energy for heating and cooling than a 6 star home.
Salvaged timber from Thor’s Hammer was used as internal flooring, external cladding and decking to make the beautiful big sliding door between the new dining and living spaces.
The Large Tongue and Groove frame sliding door was made using recycled Blackbutt timber. The customer wanted a large hanging and sliding door, specifically requesting the tongue and groove panels to match the widths of the Blackbutt floorboards for continuity of line and proportion.
The front part of the original home was retained, including the internal and external walls, ceilings, sub-floor, floor-boards and eaves. The existing single brick garage was only partly demolished and then cleverly re-used and integrated into the outdoor entertaining are to provide a privacy buffer from the future development to the east. During demolition to the rear, existing red bricks, timber rafters, benches, skirting boards and architraves were salvaged and reused where possible.
External cladding products (bricks and timber cladding) were chosen for their environmental credentials including longevity, durability, naturality and/or low embodied energy.
