Round Leg Table // Furniture Design Spotlight

July 2023

In our joinery at Thor’s Hammer we make everything from furniture to shelving and even front doors, but we’re perhaps best known for our tables. In particular, our Round Leg Table is one of our most popular designs.

Homes all over Australia are playing host to our signature Round Leg Table in a range of recycled timber species, sizes and finishes.

We love this table because it’s light yet strong, and has a clean, minimalist design.

Up in our showroom and gallery (above our joinery workshop), we have a Round Leg Table in silvertop ash that you can come and view, and you can also chat to our designers.

Read on to learn more about the design and making process for our Round Leg Table.

Round Leg Table Design Features

The rounded corners of the frame and table top, and the gently rounded underside of the top complements the round legs, and gives the table a subtle, understated softness.

The Round Leg Table features beautiful joinery that makes full use of the natural strength of recycled Australian hardwoods, and requires skilful attention from an experienced craftsperson to produce. This is especially featured in the way the round legs are joined to the support frame.

We use traditional joinery techniques that we’ve honed over the last few decades. Read on to get detail on the construction method.

How We Make Our Round Leg TableS

We make all of our furniture and joinery pieces in our workshop, just behind our showroom and gallery.

For the Round Leg Table we use a combination of two traditional joinery techniques; a bridle joint and a wedged-through tenon joint. The bridle joint displays the contrasting end grain of the timber beautifully. The leg is then tenoned through the bridle joint, locking it in place, with a wedge for extra strength.

These traditional joinery techniques have been used by joiners and cabinet makers for hundreds of years, which is how you know they’re reliable!

We dry the leg stock to a very low moisture content before cutting the tenons which means it will tend to expand over time and make the joint become even stronger over the years.

Understanding how different timber species are likely to behave in their furniture form is a big part of the expertise that we bring to the table (excuse the pun!). We have an intimate knowledge of recycled Australian hardwood timber and we incorporate this experience into every piece we design and make.

MAKE IT UNIQUELY YOURS

We offer a range of customisations to all of our designs, including our Round Leg Table.

Our signature Thor’s Hammer range of furniture designs are a popular choice for many of our customers, with tried and tested designs that can be customised in size and proportions to fit their space perfectly.

We also offer a Bespoke Design Service, which is the ideal option for customers with a unique, one off project.

All of our furniture and joinery is available in the finish and recycled timber species of your choice.

Here are some of the customisation options you might like to consider for your Round Leg Table:

1—Size

The Round Leg Table design can be made larger or smaller than our standard design but it suits a smaller to medium size table seating up to a maximum of 10 people. The Round Leg Table works best as an 8 seater around 2180mm long, but can be increased to seat 10 with a maximum of 2800mm long x 1050mm wide.

Our designer will work closely with you on this to help you choose the best size for your space, while ensuring that the design integrity isn’t compromised.

2—Shape

Our standard design has a rectangular shaped tabletop with rounded corners. We can also adapt the design to suit a round or square table top.

3—Timber Species & Finish

Picking the timber species and finish is, for some, the most exciting part, as every species has different colours and qualities.

The Round Leg Table will work for most timber species and finishes, however we don’t recommend using at natural edge slab or a sawtooth finish, but most other options should be possible!

Our timber is all recycled Australian hardwood timber, salvaged from old houses, shearing sheds, warehouses and factories all up and down the eastern states of Australia. This brings with it the history of where it’s come from, and sometimes unique markings as well.

Finally, you can choose from a matt or satin Osmo Hardwax Oil finish, which will give a slightly different appearance to the timber. A matt finish leaves the timber looking more natural and raw, while the satin finish is less understated and brings out the colours in the timber more.

Learn about some of the popular timber species below, and make sure to share with your designer the colour and aesthetic you’re going for so that they can suggest the best species and finish.
